Vietnam of course isn't really in Indonesia. But it makes sense that coffee can grow here. They have the mountains for it, and they are the second biggest global grower of robusta coffee, so coffee is a big part of their economy. But this is arabica coffee! I suspect none of our customers have had Vietnamese arabica coffee before. This is rare.
We have two offerings from Vietnam right now, and the other one is a traditional washed process coffee, but this one is wet-hulled process, so it's in the style of Indonesia. Indeed, we roasted it into 2nd cracks, and it tastes like a really well sorted Sumatra or Sulawesi coffee, with lots of herbal notes like root beer, licorice root, a medley of spices and sweetness. It isn't earthy or tobacco, but there's hints of mineral.
I'm roasting it similar to a wet-hulled Indonesian coffee. At least to rolling 2nd cracks and even a little further depending on preference.
I'm really impressed with how high of quality of coffee we are seeing out of a producing country that has traditionally grown robusta almost exclusively and didn't have to worry about such care in processing.
