Laos is a landlocked country between Vietnam and Thailand in Southeast Asia. It doesn't have particularly high altitude so the majority of their coffee production is robusta. They historically have only exported a few hundred bags of arabica specialty coffee grade beans each year, however, their coffee is really worth trying! This offering is particularly special because it is 100% Typica varietal, having been carefully picked and sorted and hand processed.
It is a very forgiving coffee and we enjoy it everywhere from light (like a Costa Rica) to medium (like a Colombia) to dark (like a Timor) but we more or less landed on medium-dark as our favorite roast. A few snaps into second cracks. A couple degrees darker than we take Guatemala. Not super dark, but a little darker than a medium roast. At this level we are getting savory and sweet notes. Some raspberry. Smoked vanilla. Citrus. Slight tobacco. Thick mouthfeel.
In lighter roasts, there's almost a hibiscus/key lime brightness that's really nice, and in darker roasts, it brings out deeper spice, smoky, tobacco notes that are really satisfying, so it's really up to you where you want it to land.
