Burundi is a landlocked country in Africa, about the size of Maryland. They are recovering from a civil war from 1993-2006 where 300,000 people died and no coffee was exported. Now, issues of corruption, ethnic inequality, poverty, and unemployment are threatening to start civil war again.

The region of Kayanza grows some of the best coffee in the whole world. It is surrounded by the Ruvubu National Forest, has freshwater lakes, and is close enough to the capital city to have access to infrastructure and technological advances.

Our importer for this coffee is an amazing woman, a Burundi citizen, who helps sell her neighbors' coffees. We met her in Chicago earlier this year, but her reputation proceeded her. We've known for years that she is one of the best sources of Burundi coffee, and it was an honor to meet her.

This is a washed process coffee. It was sorted out as a microlot and consists of only Red Bourbon varietal beans. We have had so many Burundi coffees this year, and it's because they keep blowing us away on how good they are. They keep tasting good and we keep buying them. Burundi is about to be a super power in the coffee industry.
