Yemen does not grow a lot of coffee, but it is considered one of the world’s best. Yemen coffee is malty (guiness beer) chocolatey, spicy, and smooth, with a clean aftertaste and such an alluring flavor and satisfying experience that you keep going back for another cup and another cup. It’s an amazing coffee that no other origin can copy.
This particular lot of Yemen is from a socially responsible co-op in the Sanani region.
The coffee grown in Yemen is of the Mokka varietal which mostly only grows in Ethiopia and Yemen. It is a low-yielding, hard to grow varietal of coffee, but has a distinct taste. There's just no other coffee quite like a Yemen.
Because Yemen is such an unstable country, it is expensive to export products. We are not supporting any terrorism or war by buying this coffee -- we are supporting small land-owning farmers in a very remote region of the country. But to get this coffee to sea, they face bandits, impassable roads, mortar fire. Once at sea, they face pirates. And once the coffee makes it to America, every single bag is x-rayed for weapons, and the x-ray bill is tacked on to the customs fees.
Yemen is a coffee that you won't ever find in a grocery store, and rarely if ever in a coffee shop. Instead, it is held back for the true coffee aficionados to enjoy now and then.
