Guatemala Antigua Alotenango

This is a 30 bag microlot from Alotenango -- a micro-region within Antigua. I normally don't stock the Antiguas, but if I'm going to stock one, it is going to be the cream of the crop, so here is this year's selection for your enjoyment. It is Fair Trade and Organic certified from a handful of small producing farmers.
The varietals are of bourbon and caturra, shade grown at 5000-5500 feet.
The coffee is not a classic Antigua, and it does not have the bright acidity and citrus usually associated with ths region. The coffee is incredibly aromatic and has several layers of complexity in the taste. Antigua is not a French Roast coffee. Take it just into the 2nd cracks to enjoy the smoky chocolate notes and butterscotch and cinnamon that it offers, but this is not how we are roasting it. We are treating it like a Costa Rica, a nice City+ roast, where it is sweeter and we taste the widest spectrum of flavor. After the enjyable aroma, you will taste some floral notes like chamomile, jasmine, and honeysuckle, and orange blossom. It is tea-like except that the body is creamy and full. The next layer of flavor includes cinnamon and chocolate. In these lighter roasts, there is not any bitterness, but as you progressively roast it darker, you will start to find bitterness in the aftertaste. There is slight citrus and slight juiciness, but it is not the prominent attribute as it is in most antiguas. USA arrival: August 2015
