This microlot Peru comes from the El Palto cooperative and is Fair Trade Organic certified. It was grown in the Amazons, in Northern Peru in a province known as Utcubamba. A lot of Peruvian coffee is grown much farther South and West.
This is hand's down the most complex, interesting Peru coffee that I have ever tasted! The entire lot was grown on one farm, 5000 feet above sea level, and consists of several different varietals. At a light roast (full city, 407 degrees) it's tart and vegetal and not particularly enjoying in taste, but surprisingly complex. In a medium roast, just shy of the beginning of 2nd cracks, you get a mellowed out, full bodied chocolatey taste, but the surprising part is the undertones of blackberry, caramel, and vanilla. A creamy, toffee, butterscotch clean aftertaste makes you keep going back for more.
I presume you can French roast it just fine, but I've got the less expensive COOPAFSI for that. This one, I'm roasting as a medium roast and enjoying as a single origin Peru.
